Clinical Psychologist Service for Chester & Wirral
Inside Out Psychology is an Independent Clinical Psychologist Service, owned and run by, Dr Maria Knapp, Chartered Clinical Psychologist. With clinics at Chester and Wirral we can be accessed easily from the Liverpool, Birkenhead, Northwich and Wrexham areas.
Maria has a wealth of experience as a psychologist working with children, young people and adults across a wide range of presenting difficulties affecting psychological well-being, such as:
- Low mood or depression
- Stress (including work- or school-related)
- Anxiety (including specific phobias, social anxiety, generalised anxiety, panic and obsessive compulsive-disorder)
- Difficulties associated with loss (such as grief, bereavement, separation, divorce, or job loss)
- Behavioural difficulties
- Relationship difficulties
- Parenting difficulties
- Appearance issues (including body image, body dysmorphia)
- Self-esteem/confidence/social skills
- Health-related concerns, such as living with and managing acute or chronic illness (including pain)
- Trauma and PTSD
Maria also has specialist expertise in working with psychological difficulties related to the adjustment to, coping with, and/or management of physical health conditions. She has extensive experience of providing support around visible difference, including assessments as part of decision-making for elective surgery (such as cosmetic surgery).
Qualifications and experience
Maria has been qualified as a Clinical Psychologist since 1999 and holds a Doctorate in Clinical Psychology from University of Teesside. She is also an accredited Practitioner Psychologist with the Health and Care Professions Council (HCPC) and is registered as a Chartered Psychologist with the British Psychological Society.
Maria’s professional background and experience is in the NHS, with over 17 years’ experience in this setting; 9 years at Consultant level. She now works full-time with Inside Out Psychology as an independent Clinical Psychologist.

Appointments are available at our bases in Wirral (easily accessible from Liverpool) and in Upton, Chester (close to Wrexham and Northwich)
